After the premiere of “Northern wind” I was eager to say some words about Renata Litvinova -the director of the play and the actress, who played several roles.
For some years I’ve been following her creative work with some kind of affection. “She’s not like the others” – that’s what I’ve always thought and I’ve never doubted that in her everyday life she was as extraordinary and mystical as on the screen. Our meeting in real life and our friendly communication just proved my theory.
“Not like the others” – that’s what professors of Russian State University of Cinematography used to say. However they meant something different saying so. They gave back Renata’s course works with negative comments on her unacceptable stylistic errors. Those errors will later become her signature style.
Litvinova’s intonations became a signature style as well. I read somewhere that at first the intonations shocked critics, who even claimed that she didn’t speak Russian well!
Today Renata Litvinova is one of the most popular persons in Russian cinematography and theatre. She is an actress, a film director, a screenplay writer, a TV-host, a fashion designer and only God knows who else.
I deeply respect Renata as a personality and I consider her to be a person with thinking beyond stereotypes. Her epatage is not a protest against modern values and traditions. She has just once found her style and since then occupied her proper place and became an integral part of the Russian culture.
