When the Master (Mark Zakharov) is working on the realization of his idea for 10 years, it makes the audience intrigued in advance. The plot of the play is based on Vladimir Sorokin’s novels “Day of the Oprichnik” and “Telluria”. The action takes place “100 years after the premiere”.
Sorokin provokes controversial attitude towards himself. That’s the reason why the play also aroused controversial feelings while I was watching it. On one hand, brilliant performance of actors and curious stage design. On the other hand – not clearly identified status of main characters and too many vulgar expressions.
Nevertheless the play made a good impression. Most of all I liked the ending. Among the advantages I’d underline Zakharov’s tradition to add live music.
Actor Victor Rakov did his best to justify negative features of the main character. Until the last moment I had doubts if he was a good or a bad person. From the actors’ team I’d like to mention Sergey Stepanchenko and Dmitry Pevtsov. They managed to show authentically the scandalous Sorokin’s satire.
It goes without saying, every spectator will form his own opinion about the play, but nobody can deny, that in spite of all the heaviness of original Sorokin’s works, all was made elegantly and beautifully!
We watched the play together with Maria Fedun
